Laney Todd has grown in up Thatcher, a small town in South Carolina where she had to deal with everyday prejudice and down south racism. The only real friends she has are Mike, the only other biracial person around and Blair. Together, they tackle high school and when Laney falls in love for the first time, they find that as bad as they thought it was in Thatcher, it was only going to get worse. Laney learns that life only gets harder as you get older and that life can deal you a bad hand when it feels like it. As the three friends venture out into college together, Laney gets involved with the wrong person and her friends must choose to stay by her side or walk away when she can't seem to help herself. Things get more complicated when a person from her past pops back into her life. Will she ever face her problems head on or will she find herself alone and unhappy?
