This book is the second in the Hutchinson Trilogy, this time following the life of another John Hutchinson, grandson of the first. With a life beginning in the worst of circumstances, he has to take every chance he can to survive. Life in the mid Nineteenth Century is not easy for anyone in the lower working classes. Mortality is high. The working man is very lucky to see fifty years. Poverty, dirt and disease are an accepted way of life. Responsibility is forced on him now there are others who depend on him.
