Riley Thompson, a sportswriter trapped in a rocky marriage who has a penchant for hard-luck human interest tales, has just found his next big story. On a train journey across the United States, he meets Nullo, a eunuch who is the leader of a strange movement that's attempting to kickstart the next great human evolution by abandoning all sexuality-and Nullo believes that Riley is the person to deliver his message and life story to the wider world. Over the course of several interviews to plumb the mysteries of Nullo's past, a friendship begins to bloom between Riley, Nullo, and Nullo's two traveling companions: his childhood best friend William and his disciple, the yoga instructor Pam. But eventually, Nullo's darker secrets begin to lead the revolutionary closer and closer to a tragic fate-while Riley, through his new friends, begins to rediscover a joy in living he may have forgotten about.
