Death was his only salvation until he was forced in another direction. Eighteen months into a life sentence, Dan Draden and the entire San Quentin inmate population were set free. After the horrific murder of his wife and son, along with unfulfilled attempt for revenge, Dan was content living the rest of his days in a prison cell. During the chaotic flee from the prison, Dan and three other lifers soon find out the reason for the early release; the dead have overtaken the living. Able to secure a prison boat, the group headed into the San Francisco Bay and the severity of the destruction comes in full view. Traveling alongside a drug smuggling boat captain, a former head of an East Oakland gang, a computer hacker, and a young college student, Dan Draden is thrust into a leadership role for survival. When he comes across a former member of his anti-terrorism team, Dan's mission of survival becomes a quest for answers. Informed he was part of a much bigger plan to counter the living dead, Dan leads his group on a mission to find the answer. As their journey through the dead takes them from San Francisco to Catalina Island, the group realizes the living are far more dangerous than the dead. After he uncovers a dark secret on the island, Dan must decide between the search for the truth behind his past and the survival of his new team. Through pain and sacrifice, the reality of Dan's history comes to light.
