Barry Stroud has since the 1970s been one of the most original contributors to the philosophical study of human knowledge; this volume presents the best of his essays in this area. Stroud suggests that anyone pursuing epistemology needs to concern themselves with the truth or falsity of philosophical scepticism. He seeks to identify clearly the question or issue to which theories of human knowledge give positive answers, and to which scepticism gives a negative answer. So central themes of this book are: What is problematic, or to be explained, about human knowledge? and What does a philosophical theory of knowledge seek? Stroud's discussion of these fundamental questions is essential reading for all philosophers working in this area.
