Women's lives changed dramatically during the Second World War. This heart-warming and exciting story follows the fortunes of Jean Winter, a newly qualified teacher from the east end of Glasgow, from what might have been a very normal existence as a married Scottish woman, to something quite different. As the wife of a prisoner of war, Jean decides to join the Wrens rather than teaching. The Wren, or Women's Royal Naval Service, was responsible for nearly all the shore based work of the Royal Navy and even some seagoing activities. The work of these wartime ladies prepared the way for the Navy of today, where women serve on ships on equal terms with their male colleagues. Whilst posted in England, Jean falls deeply in love with a young Naval Lieutenant, but experiences heartbreaking tragedy, as so many women during the war endured. But life and the war goes on. Jean progresses in the Wrens, and is posted to Sydney as a First Officer in the Pacific Fleet. After Victory in Europe, the war in the Pacific continues until the devastating atomic bombs are dropped on Japan. Jean finds herself at the centre of operations and focuses on her career, wondering if she will ever find happiness and love again.
