Dafoe is an unscrupulous, greedy, profane man.  He totally lacks a moral compass, much less follow one. He will lie and cheat to get what he wants, and what he usually wants is cold, hard cash for services rendered. His only redeeming feature is that he's brutally honest both about his amoral nature and in his sardonic observations of the dark side of the world he has embraced. Nothing is sacred.
