Publisher Marketing: In recent years, the use of software and multimedia in the United States Air Force has proliferated at an amazing rate. Indeed, the Air Force's Desktop Computer purchases (i.e., Desktop I, II, III, and IV) have provided hundreds of thousands of PC's and associated software to military members and civil service employees for use in their everyday jobs. For the most part, these computers and software products are provided with little, if any, accompanying training, especially with regard to copyright matters. As a result of this rapidly expanding use, Air Force software users and developers have a vital need for basic guidance on copyright law. This research paper will discuss uses of software and multimedia including scanning and digitizing works, such as text and audiovisual content, for inclusion or insertion in software or multimedia products. This project will also cover various aspects of intellectual property and copyright law that relate to software and multimedia, including copyrightability, exclusive rights of copyright holders, exceptions to copyright protection, and copyright infringement issues. While most copyright law concepts are complex and laden with jargon and legalese, this guide will outline the basic principles that software users and developers need for a general understanding of intellectual property law, copyrights, and copyright infringement issues. By reviewing and adhering to this guidance, Air Force users and developers of computer software can avoid copyright infringement actions, thus preventing personal and Government liability.
