Lisa Frieden was a young professional with a bright future ahead of her in high tech public relations, when tragedy struck. Dialysis: a Memoir describes the year she spent on dialysis, from her initial hospitalization with kidney failure, through the months on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, to her successful transplant operation. Her experience of illness was at odds with the wildly buoyant atmosphere of the San Francisco Bay Area where she lived and worked during the dotcom bubble of the late 1990's. The memoir explores how she learned to make sense of what happened and how she ultimately overcame the physical and emotional challenges of kidney failure to thrive in her new life.
