Hazel, a perpetual liar, is fifteen and lives with her extended family and David, her stepfather who she hates for breaking up her parents. Hazel meets Simon, forty, married, father of three teenage boys and Hazel falls in love with Simon. Hazel wants Simon's house, car and him, so tells stories about David to keep Simon interested in her. Destroying Simon's marriage, they live together in a flat where she continues to lie about David. Hazel becomes pregnant by a younger man and almost dies when a very jealous Simon beats her almost to death. She is saved by the one person she hates the most through her pride and in the end, realises she was wrong about him.
