Sarah Holloway has no intention of becoming a ?Soldier?s wife?. She is bright, attractive and one of Wellesley?s earliest, female college graduates. But a chance encounter at a Charity Ball changes her life. She meets Cadet Jonathan Johnson, a senior at West Point. A courtship follows, and, with a reluctant approval of her father, they become engaged. Marriage though is delayed as Cadet Johnson becomes Lieutenant Johnson and goes west for ?Indian Duty?. He returns a year later, and they are married. Immediately, the two are again separated as the groom returns to Fort Riley in search of housing. Sarah begins a trip west to join Jonathan, and the story follows Sarah as she not only adjusts to ?army life? but succeeds in defining her own life. But, regrettably, as her life settles into a comfortable cadence with increasing responsibilities - including children, husband, job, and personal growth - Lieutenant Johnson receives ?orders? which will move Sarah and her family to a different post and life.
