Soar is a memoir which begins with a description of the early family life of Joyce Jeffries who battled the stigma and setbacks associated with disability and discrimination. This true story tells of her struggle to beat the odds of acquiring higher education which she viewed as the only path to a successful life. Her strength was drawn from the love of parents who enabled her to reject the labels of inferiority often pinned on her. Raised with five siblings in a poor but cultured Harlem community, Joyce was determined to climb out of poverty. The force which propelled her to face challenges and overcome obstacles is best described as faith. She learned early on how to depend on God for the tools needed to burst through the barriers which threatened her survival. Destiny was clearly defined when Joyce met the love of her life, and stumbled into the world of Bene White. Commitment, wise choices and team work afforded them a chance to realize their dreams. Writing her memoir forced the author to mentally visit some places she thought were buried. It allowed her to trace the circumstances of both the pain and joy which morphed her into the person she is today. Having pricked those emotions turned out to be a blessing as well as a healing process. It is with gratitude and excitement that she invites you to soar on this adventurous journey of faith.
