After the chaos of the war crimes case that very nearly ended both their lives, CPO Grant Nilsson and prosecutor Carly Jackson are taking things slow. Things are peaceful and easy until Carly is assigned a murder case with the accused being a prominent local gang member. Carly tries to keep her worlds as separate as they can be but after a series of threatening letters, the final straw is a drive-by shooting of her laundromat while she's in there. Her superiors reach out to a private security firm who supply the details of an ex-military security guard with the skills to protect Carly. The security guard is Grant. Carly is reluctant and prickly, chafing under the restrictions, and Grant finds it necessary to pull back from their personal relationship to ensure he can keep Carly safe.
