In 1964, nine members of the Ledyard Canoe Club at Dartmouth College paddled canoes 1,500 miles down the Danube River. Of the eight countries traveled, six were behind the Iron Curtain. Their journey became a cover story for the National Geographic Magazine in June 1965.
