The Vatican sends a trusted agent, Alejandro (Alex) Fuentes, to the American/Mexican border to determine the practicality of a proposed Papal visit. He is also tasked with-and distracted by-an investigation into the canonical legitimacy of a rogue priest. This brings with it the problems of several characters whose back stories are told in fascinating interludes. An adventure with them masquerading as illegals while making a traumatic border crossing changes everything but somehow changes nothing. The story dramatizes the complexities but doesn't take sides: the supposed bad are sometimes good; the supposed good are often bad. Everything, however-both the good and the bad-is leavened with generous sprinklings of humor and romance.
