He was saved at age 6. His father was a deacon and evangelism director. His mother, a Christian schoolteacher. Jon went to church 3 times a week and attended a Christian middle school and graduated from a Southern Baptist college. In college, despite receiving an A the following semester, was asked to step down from the debate team for being "too antagonistic". At 24, he fell away from his faith. By age 32, Jon D. Webster had authored more atheist books than Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens combined. His 5 books, Nothing Sacred: An Atheist Quote-A-Day Calendar, Blasphemy: Atheist Quotes and Essays By An Apostate, Seeds of Doubt: 200 Questions Every Christian needs to answer, No Church For Me: The Best of Mike Cook, 10 Decisions I Could Have Made Better Than God, The Art of Ridicule: How to Dismiss, Disprove, and Shut Down The Opposition, and Book of the Damned: A Collection of Atheist Interviews, 4 years writing for the Modesto Atheism Examiner, his 2 years writing for Skeptic Ink, and dozen atheist podcast appearances, had earned him a guest speaking slot along with Matt Dillahunty at The Smoky Mountain Freethought Advance, being introduced by the former President of American Atheists, Ed Buckner.
