In 1925, nurse-midwife, Mary Carson Breckinridge, came to the Appalachian Mountains of Leslie County and forever changed lives in our rural mountain communities. Through her Frontier Nursing Service, her nurses on horseback brought healthcare to one of the poorest regions in the commonwealth of Kentucky.
