Clara Phillips murdered her love rival Alberta Meadows in the summer of 1922. The vicious, brutal crime inflicted on the pretty 20 year old widow caused by "unwarranted jealousy" earned Clara the names of "Hammer Slayer," "Tiger Woman" and "Stone Age Killer."

The ferocity of the attack shocked the Los Angeles community where the women lived and worked. Alberta sustained more than 50 wounds to her head and shoulders from repeated blows with a hammer and pounding with a heavy rock.
