QUINTET for Bone Rattle & Bird Wing Whistle presents five novellas of varying length about the five main characters that make up San Francisco's Mercy Investigations agency, and some of the other characters who populate the seven previous novels of the series. Morry Twych and Steady Ed Steadman reminisce over lunch at The Golden Roast, with Morry at 80 and Ed turning 70, until memory mixes with reality in a face-off with a robber at the restaurant. Jack Nowan tells the wild story of his years in Japan. Mercy Torcher gets jury duty at a murder trial. Young and handsome black Reggie Jackson helps foil a rip-off at Mr. Stein's downstairs pawn shop. And finally Cal the Cat, a monster of a mix between a Maine Coon Cat and a bit of bobcat, takes down a lowlife who's dumb enough to invade the agency to get back at Mercy Torcher when she's alone.
