After her mother dies of the flu and her father is drafted, Sara a 14 year old religious Jew, is left alone to take care of her 9 year old sister in a war-torn French town on the western front. Forced to feign madness after abuse, she struggles to maintain her sanity and preserve the religious values of her sister while living above a cafe where ex-prostitutes entertain soldiers for their livelihood. She befriends a young British volunteer who is found barking like a dog on a train station bench. In her struggle to help him Sara meets a medic, and they try together to save lives and rise above the madness of the First World War, but the war will not let them.
