Captain Yancy Freeman from Mississippi leads a Confederate cavalry unit far behind enemy lines in northwestern Virginia. He is badly wounded. He is found by Scarlett Anderson Jones, who is originally from Alabama, and she nurses him back to health. They fall in love, Scarlett becomes pregnant and then they have to find a way back to Mississippi on foot.
