Historically, The wear of material can be traced to very early periods of human history. Lenardo Devinici is known to have had an interest friction but he was characteristically well a head of his time, and consistent interest in friction and wear awaited the further development of machines. Such interest was growing in 1699 when Ammontons began to perform friction experiments to be followed in successive periods.
