Upended picks up where Side-swiped leaves off-in Kansas, where Walter and Ernestine Emmons have detoured to drop off the pregnant teenager, Clover. When Clover's mother refuses to welcome her and the baby, Ernestine makes the abrupt decision to take them home with her to Northern California. New to driving the 37-foot motorhome, Ernestine faces one difficult situation after another, including an unwitting involvement in a crime. Walter's dementia worsens, Clover is depressed, the baby is colicky, and family dynamics play havoc with Ernestine's peace of mind.
