Walking around to the front of his law office, Mason encountered his friend Odd Martin. But what astounded the lawyer was that Odd was walking down the street with his hands in the air, with a stranger holding a Winchester pointed at his back. Mason could not place the look on Odd's face. He was most certainly dazed by this situation, but, for the rest, Mason could not tell if Odd was scared, confused, or resigned- just a wave of emotions Mason couldn't completely read. Odd saw Mason and called out, "Mistah Mason, Mistah Mason, ol' Odd needs your help somethin' desperate."From this unlikely beginning, Roland Mason, attorney at law, found himself defending his friend from a charge of murder. The lawyer had to travel to New Orleans, a city with a different culture, a different system of justice, and an assumption that Odd was guilty as charged. Mason, in his attempt to prove Odd innocent, stirred up a threat he had never encountered. That threat, to Odd's life and to his, was the Ku Klux Klan.
