Brian Dornan, a long-time American ex-patriate living on an island in the Adriatic, learns that his mentor from his college days, a man who had shaped his character and the character of almost all of Brian's friends, has died. The news starts him on a journey to understand what that means - or should mean - to him. In the process, he learns more about his mentor, and himself, than he bargained for.
