Preceded by Buchan's popular novels, "The Thirty-Nine Steps" and "Greenmantle," Mr. Standfast is the second Hannay novel to take place during the First World War. In the story, Brigadier-General Hannay returns to England from the Western Front on a secret mission. Disguising himself as a pacifist, Hannay must uncover German agents operating in England and save the United Kingdom and its allies from the Germans. Known for his works of fiction, John Buchan himself later rose to become the Governor General of Canada.
