Caroline Winter, wife of professor Andrew Winter had been missing for two days before her disappearance is reported. The Detective Inspector in charge of the case Julien Montgomery, would very much like to know why? At the same time a semi-retired French Detective Gustave Lazarus, arrives in Newhaven on the Dieppe ferry to begin his search for information on the death of two children in his home town of Rouen. All he has to go on is a similar case in the West Midlands. And so, starts a friendship that takes the two detectives on a dangerous journey into the underworld of the People Traffickers, kidnappers and killers. What ties these cases together?
