Rabbit, a slave boy, feels betrayed and trapped. Taken to war by his childhood friend, Daniel, the son of the plantation owner, their friendship unravels quickly. Each faces struggles he was not prepared for. Daniel, a young lieutenant in his uncle's militia, meets nothing but mockery and disdain from the older troops. They question his skill and suspect his very real issue with battlefield cowardice. Isolated and bullied, the young lieutenant takes out his frustrations on the only one he can control-his slave boy. Once as close as brothers, Rabbit is stung by this betrayal and vows to escape to freedom. But trapped in the middle of the Confederate Army as it trudges north, he knows his chances are slim. He sure could use some help from his old friend, but the odds of that happening are even worse, since Daniel is just recovering from a knife wound-a wound inflicted on him by Rabbit himself. Things are piling up against the slave boy. His hope of being free is fading. He is running out of time and can hear the thunder of battle just down the road. Could that place hold his last chance? That place called Gettysburg?
