I spent a lot of my early twenties hitchhiking around the world. I would not do it now, but back then it was a great way of getting around. The thing that fascinated me most was the unknown. You never quite knew what could happen. If you caught a train somewhere, you would be 99.9% sure that you would arrive, pretty much on time. When you hitchhiked you never knew when or if you would arrive. Sometimes I took a detour and never arrived. I have hitched in cars, trucks, motorbikes, taxis, and even on boats, with one, two or three people, even with a surfboard. I have lived in caves, slept rough in Sweden and worked in the Arctic Circle. And it all began in Europe in 1978
