Mike Hagen is not quitting his day job, but he spends his free time writing unusual pop songs and recording them at his modest home studio. "Kielbasa Nova" is the latest result of this peculiar hobby. It's a diverse collection of 14 songs; all but two are original compositions. The fare ranges from the humorous ("My First Beer") to the ludicrous ("The Siskel and Ebert of Alternative Country"); from the bossa nova ("I Can Die Now") to country ("Hearts at Home"). There's also a cover of Steely Dan's "Any Major Dude Can Tell You", which fits right in to the mix. Nicely arranged, thoughtfully presented and ably performed. Give it a listen.
