Frank Gresham, only son of a bankrupt landowner, falls in love with the impoverished and illegitimate Mary Thorne. His aristocratic mother forbids the match, steering him to other, richer, prospects. Only Dr. Thorne, Mary's loving uncle, knows the truth of her impending inheritance.
