Born the middle child of middle class parents in Middle America on the heels of the Great Depression, Wanda Bjornlie is embraced by the warmth and protection of her brothers and parents. As World War II demands the sacrifices and attention of every U. S. citizen, the prairies of western Minnesota provide an idyllic life for a young girl and her four siblings. Nourished by the love and security of her family, Wanda ventures into a brave new world of the big city and a new career, and is eventually thrust into the tense climate of a racially charged South in the sixties.
